A woman had to be taken to hospital after a drunk man hit her in the face with a wheel brace in Whangarei early this morning.
The heavily intoxicated 20-year-old man had the wheel brace hidden down his pants when he approached the victim, a 40-year-old female, in a carpark about 3.15am, Acting Sergeant Anna Spence said.
The two had an argument and he smacked her in the face with the metal tool, used to remove nuts from car tyres.
The woman suffered severe lacerations to her face, including a 3cm gash to the side of her nose, and was being treated in hospital.
The man remained in custody and was due to appear in Whangarei District Court tomorrow to face two assault-related charges, Ms Spence said.
