A 35-year-old Whangarei man drowned while drag-netting at Baylys Beach, west of Dargaville, yesterday.
Police said the man was pulled out to sea by an undertow at 3.30pm and spent about 10 to 15 minutes in the water before being pushed back towards the shore.
A colleague and members of the public pulled him to the beach but the unnamed man could not be revived.
