Heavy rain and a slow moving weather system are posing serious flood concerns in Northland today.
WeatherWatch.co.nz reports well over 100mm of rain has fallen in a number of places north of Whangarei with the stalled front very slowly inching northwards.
One visitor to WeatherWatch.co.nz, Alan, says the rain band over the Bay of Islands "is going no where".
WeatherWatch.co.nz says since 4am Alan's online weather station has recorded 126mm of rain with the torrential downpour continuing.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says areas between the Bay of Islands and Kaitaia will be in line for heavy rain this afternoon. "The band of torrential rain is very slowly inching northwards. It should ease in the Bay of Islands this afternoon but may not ease further north until overnight".
"In light of this we are advising locals to be on the look out for rapidly rising rivers, surface flooding and slips. Over 120mm of rain in one day is a significant amount for farming regions," says Mr Duncan.
