Sixty firefighters are battling a blaze in a school block at Northcote College. The fire in E block, the school's technology block, was discovered by a security guard shortly before 8pm. One student told the Herald she, along with many others, had schoolwork inside the burning building. Another said many of the projects are Year 13 portfolios for NCEA.

Police are investigating after Northcote College's technical block went up in flames on Friday night, destroying a year's work of some students who were finalising their portfolios for assessment.

Principal Vicki Barrie said the school has two weeks to get organised before students return from their term break.

She said they will be getting support from the Ministry of Education to help clear up the site and provide new facilities for students.
