A man will appear in court this morning facing multiple charges after an almost five-hour standoff with armed police at an Auckland property.
The man was “sought by police” and was located at a house on Mulroy Place in Pinehill about 4pm yesterday.
“Police attempted to engage with the person, but they refused to co-operate,” a police spokesperson said today.
“After prolonged efforts to engage with the person police including the Armed Offenders Squad entered the residence and at 9.30pm the person was taken into custody.
“The 32-year-old man is due to appear in North Shore District Court facing charges including assault and escaping police custody.”
Photos provided to the Herald show uniformed and armed police outside the house during the standoff.
A Pinehill resident said there were at least eight police cars in the street during the incident, along with two ambulances and a fire truck.
“I was doing some renovation work at a rental property that we owned when I noticed that a police car had arrived. The police got out and took their guns out from their trunk and sat back into their car. It seemed as if they were waiting for someone,” he said.
“Then, around 6pm the police left. At that time we decided to walk back home, but as soon as we walked onto Mulroy Pl we noticed several people standing at the top of the hill looking at something.
“I walked closer and realised that there were several police cars and police officers surrounding a house. We decided to walk back home on Rosedale Road (which) is very high (and) we had a good vantage point of everything that was happening.
“After having dinner, I went to check on the incident again and noticed that the Armed Offenders Squad had arrived.
