More than 12,000 drivers on Auckland's North Shore were tested for alcohol in a police blitz over the weekend.
Police found 82 over the legal drinking limit. Twenty eight of the drivers elected to have blood tests taken, which will determine whether or not they will face court proceedings. Eleven were teenagers.
At one particular location every 16th driver on average was over the legal limit and every 5th driver had alcohol on their breath.
The operation was the third in a series run throughout the Waitemata police district.
Senior Sergeant Fraser says the purpose is to deny drunk drivers access to their intended locations by 'locking down' all available arterials into that particular area.
