The North Island can expect a warm, dry week - bad for the farmers but good for everyone else.
Weather Watch chief analyst Philip Duncan said there would be no rain in the North Island this week with lots of very high temperatures.
"This week is dominated by northerlies, so it's going to be a warm week this week, for the North Island especially ... particularly late in the week. No rain for the north."
Auckland could expect temperatures in the low twenties.
This weather was unfortunate for farmers, who had not seen much rain for a while, he said.
Severe winds of up to 120km/h in Central Hawkes Bay and Tararua were "watered-down" spring weather arriving.
"It's what we should have seen last month, arriving now ... Spring's been very quiet for the last few weeks, and what we're seeing now is spring's finally kind of waking up and getting going."
He said a mix of high pressure in the north and low pressure in the south, which caused the strong winds in the central North Island, would build again in the South Island tomorrow.
MetService issued a weather warning yesterday forecasting heavy rain overnight tonight which will last into tomorrow in the Fiordland mountains.
MetService forecaster Mark Pascoe said at this stage it was just a warning that heavy rain might be on the way.
There was also a bit of uncertainty about how long the weather would last, he said, and exactly how much rain there was going to be.
