Rural North Island firefighters have been kept busy with a scrub fire and a large blaze at a hay barn this afternoon.
Two Bay of Plenty fire crews were called to the 80m by 8m scrub fire on Thornton Hill Rd, about 14km west of Whakatane, shortly after 5pm.
Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said crews had only just arrived but the fire should be out "pretty quickly".
The fire broke out about half an hour after Far North fire crews were called to a large hay barn blaze south of Kaikohe.
Mr Phillips said the 40m by 30m building was well alight when two fire crews and a water tanker arrived at the Piccadilly Rd farm in Tautoro.
