A Northland retailer who fled from his shop moments before an armed P user was shot dead by police says people need a lot more education about the evils of methamphetamine.
A siege at Brett Sawyers' First Mobile store in Whangarei last October ended when police shot Lee Jane Mettam, 37.
Today Mr Sawyers and other supporters will launch the Northland P Project, a community effort to "turn the tide" on P.
After the shooting, a community meeting of about 500 people decided action was needed and a committee was formed to distribute a CD featuring former addicts to every one of the 55,000 homes in Northland.
Mr Sawyers said it showed how the drug trapped its victims, and what people needed to know to keep their families and communities safe.
He said today's launch would begin raising $400,000 to distribute the CD. The campaign would also include 10,000 T-shirts for people to wear on October 23 to show support.
