A Massey man charged with murder after a stabbing rampage has been ruled unfit to stand trial.
Martin Robert Lyall, 35, a cook, appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday, where he was judged mentally impaired and was remanded to a psychiatric facility.
Lyall was arrested after murdering Kevan Newman, 65, attempting to murder Robert Norcross, wounding parking warden Pes Fa'aui and assaulting a constable to avoid arrest, in west Auckland, on November 28 last year.
The attacks ended when he was shot during a stand-off with armed police.
Lyall was a voluntary community patient of the Waitemata District Health Board's mental health service at the time of the killing.
