No traffic woes ahead of wet FIFA final

Traffic is flowing freely in Auckland in the lead up to tonight's Fifa U-20 World Cup final at Auckland's North Harbour Stadium.

The final between Brazil and Serbia will kick off at 5pm.

Mali took out third place in the tournament, after beating Senegal at a game earlier today.

Auckland Transport's operations manager for special events, Logan Christian, said things were well underway, and there were currently around 14,000 people in the stadium.

Mr Christian said considering the weather conditions, there had been very few issues with traffic around Auckland today.

"They are not great conditions for getting around. I'm very pleased with driver behaviour.

"The traffic all day has been pretty good. Around the venue and across Auckland in general, it is free flowing at the moment."

However, he said it may get slightly more congested within the next hour in the lead up to this evening's final.

Mr Christian said many people had opted to take public transport to and from today's games.

MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr said it was set to be a wet game as "the back edge" of a band of rain which had been sweeping through the region today was still sitting over Auckland.

"It's moving over the Auckland region at the moment. They might get some drier patches over the next couple of hours before it clears out after the game."

He said the temperature was currently sitting around 15C.

Strong gusty northerlies that have been blowing throughout the region today would also interfere with tonight's game, before easing over the next few hours, Mr Kerr said.
