Wairarapa might have won the Jacob Creek quinrangular inter-provincial tennis tournament last season but selector Steve Hurley still sees them as underdogs leading into the 2008 version of the event at the Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington from tomorrow through until Sunday.
Hurley says Wairarapa caught Wellington, Hutt Valley, Kapi Mana and Manawatu "on the hop" last year but that meant they would not have the surprise element in their favour this time round.
"They won't be taking anything granted against us, they'll be all out to knock us off our perch," he said.
A huge plus for Wairarapa though is the news that Marcus Daniell, who has been performing so well on the international circuit, is flying home to Masterton today and will be available to play for them over the weekend.
He was one of their star performers in last year's success and will be expected to be a dominant force in both singles and doubles play again.
Also pleasing for Wairarapa is that Jono Hurley, who these days is coaching professionally at the Island Bay club in Wellington and playing for Maungaraki in the capital's premier inter-club competition, is also returning to the fold.
He will play in the No.2 slot in the singles with the other two places there being contested by Baden Stevenson (Gladstone), Luke Atkinson (Masterton), Chris Schofield (Gladstone), Kelby Courtney (Carterton) and Geoff Janse (Masterton), all of whom are likely to get at least some action in doubles play if they are not required for the singles.
Missing from the women's line-up from last year's Wairarapa side is former Central Districts rep Leanne Sweeney and her absence at the bottom end of the singles will be missed as she practically guaranteed a win for the team there.
Katie Wyeth (Opaki) will again be at the top of the singles order with Ashleigh Gane (Masterton), Carla Didsbury (Martinborough), Emma Stevenson (Gladstone), Natasha Robinson (Opaki), Sade Atkinson (Masterton) and Zoe Schofield (Gladstone) competing for the other three berths.
Stevenson is an interesting selection in the Wairarapa squad as injury problems have stopped her appearing on the inter-club scene this season but Steve Hurley is optimistic that if she is not able to play in the singles she will be able to front up in the doubles.
Sade Akinson and Zoe Schofield are still eligible for age group play with Atkinson having made the Central Districts 12yrs national tournament team.
She played in a junior tourney in Wanganui last weekend and won the girls 12yrs singles and doubles titles there.
Youngster sister Georgia Atkinson also did well at the Wanganui event, winning the girls 10yrs singles, while another Wairarapa player in Johnty Tatham won the consolation plate in the boys 12yrs singles.
No surprise element this year, says Hurley
