Surf Life Saving New Zealand spokesman Andy Kent said that, contrary to reports, the children of the man recovered yesterday were not on the scene when his body was found.
They had been taken to the Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving Club and lifeguards were caring for them when their father's body was found.
"The children were wet and cold and were treated for mild hypothermia," Mr Kent said.
The water claimed another victim yesterday when a 25-year-old Chinese man drowned while snorkelling at popular marine reserve Goat Island, north of Auckland, about 3.45pm.
Westpac Rescue helicopter advanced paramedic Chris Deacon said the man's body was spotted underwater by crew on board a glass-bottomed boat.
One of them dived into the water and got him out and first aid was administered.
An ambulance arrived from Warkworth and continued CPR, as did helicopter paramedics, but the man did not respond.
Mr Kent said the long weekend was a tragic start to the season.
"Every summer we see consistencies in drowning incidents where people are wearing inappropriate clothing without safety equipment such as life jackets. Many are unaware of hazardous surf conditions and rips," he said.
"People should check out weather and tide conditions before heading to their destinations and be prepared for the conditions."
He urged people to take responsibility for their own safety by:
* Learning to swim;
* wearing the correct equipment;
* being sunsmart;
* being aware of dangers by entering shallow and unknown water feet first, and obey all safety signs and warning flags;
* no going into the water after drinking alcohol;
* learning to recognise rip currents;
* never swimming when tired or cold;
* paying close attention to children in or near water; and
* swimming between the flags.
