Even a desperate plea to Wellington Mayor Mark Blumsky has failed to save Toot, the cat-murdering canine, from execution.
Mr Blumsky told the dog's owner, Tracey White, the council would be in contempt of court if it did not uphold an order to have Toot destroyed.
A Wellington District Court judge condemned Toot to death after the six-year-old dog killed a cat.
The High Court rejected an appeal last week, and Mr Blumsky said he had no power to intervene.
The Whites could take Toot to be put down themselves and must then produce a vet's certificate as proof. If they did not act, the council would take over.
"Condemned dogs have disappeared in the past," he said.
