KEY POINTS:
There have been no reports of any New Zealanders missing or injured in the devastating earthquake that shook China yesterday.
The 7.8 magnitude quake devastated southwestern China yesterday, killing close to 9000 people and trapping hundreds of others under flattened schools, factories and houses.
Centred in Sichuan province, it struck in the middle of the school day (around 6.30pm NZT) and toppled at least eight schools. At least one hospital was also razed, state media said.
The death toll appeared likely to climb in China's worst earthquake for over three decades.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) spokeswoman said there were 15 New Zealanders registered on their Safe Travel website (www.safetravel.govt.nz) in the affected areas, Sichuan and Chonqing.
Mfat was contacting New Zealanders known to be in those areas to check on their wellbeing.
Any New Zealanders concerned about the welfare of family members known to be in the region should call Mfat and speak to the consular officer on 04 439 8000, the spokeswoman said.
