It may be a week before it is known whether further charges will be laid against a man arrested after an alleged assault on a three-year-old girl, who died of her injury on Monday.
Seini Unaloto Ikamanu, also known as Jane, died in Auckland's Starship Hospital as a result of a head injury she suffered at a property in the suburb of Beach Haven on Auckland's North Shore in March.
Seini underwent emergency surgery to relieve swelling in her brain following the incident and was in palliative care until her death.
A 27-year-old man, whose name is suppressed, was arrested following the incident and charged with four counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Police have not ruled out further charges.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said if the man was to face more serious charges, these would not be laid until his scheduled court appearance next Wednesday.
The man remains on bail, which was granted when he last appeared in Auckland High Court, Mr Loughlin said.
