Just a week after the head-on crash that nearly killed Michelle Davies, the notorious Maramarua highway was ignored in the announcement of special roading funds for Waikato.
It's a decision Port Waikato MP Paul Hutchison says will cost lives - fatalities he says are directly the fault of transport minister Annette King.
"It's negligent. It's a bloody disgrace. This is New Zealand's worst killer road and it's being ignored. There will be more deaths."
He claimed the decision was made to keep happy the constituents of Hamilton's four Labour MPs.
State Highway 1 is getting $215m to complete a four-lane highway - the same type of road wanted by Maramarua and Mangatangi.
Thousands of people have written to the Herald on Sunday, or signed petitions, calling for the highway to be given priority. Instead, improvements to the road are being carried out piecemeal. A $48 million bypass of Mangatawhiri was planned to start at the end of last year but was postponed after problems with the tendering process.
No more cash for killer highway
