Whangarei District Council says drinking water is safe for consumption - despite a rotting goat being found in a dam used to supply the town.
Council staff yesterday removed the dead animal from the Whau Valley dam after the Northern Advocate newspaper was tipped off by an irate ratepayer.
The council's senior water technician David Read said the goat "in no way compromises water quality because of the dilution effect and because the water in the reservoir is treated at the treatment plant before it reaches households".
