A funnel cloud that swept across Pt Chevalier yesterday gave the appearance of a tornado but posed no danger, MetService said.
The funnel prompted calls to the police and Fire Service as it headed towards land but it did not touch ground.
MetService weather ambassador Bob McDavitt said funnel clouds, which were very weak, were spotted around New Zealand about once a month.
