Dalefield coach Rochelle Retter wasn't looking for excuses after her team's 2-1 defeat by Indians in their Wellington premier division women's hockey match played at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
It was the third time in as many matches this season
that Dalefield had lost to
Indians and Retter said her
side had created enough good scoring chances to reverse the two previous results on this occasion.
"We had at least five excellent chances to score and took one of them, that was pretty much it in a nutshell," she said.
"It wasn't that we didn't play well, it was just that our finishing work wasn't quite what it should have been."
Megan Parker was a standout for Dalefield, starring with the solidness of her defence while in the halfline and then adding punch to the attack when moved to the role of striker.
The speed of Charlotte Meo up front was always obvious and she scored Dalefield's only goal after a run which started near halfway and again there was a lot to admire about the coolness of goalkeeper Sara Crofoot on defence.
The Dalefield men took an early 1-0 lead over Indians in their Wellington premier division match also played at the National Hockey Stadium and were still well in the game against the competition leaders when they trailed by just 2-1 at halftime.
A four goal burst within a period of 10 minutes in the second spell did, however, end any hopes of a Dalefield success but coach Mark Fenwick said there were still many plusses in what, in the end, was a 7-3 loss.
"We gave as good as we
received through most of the game and against a team like Indians that takes some doing," Fenwick said. "We wanted to be competitive and we were, they certainly didn't have it all their own way".
The defence of right half Thomas Merriman made him player of the day for Dalefield while others to shine were goalkeeper Alan Brady, skipper Rowan Yeo and Greg Mason.
Goal scorers for Dalefield were Mark Duxbury, Daniel Juno and Pete Sigvertsen.
No excuses, says coach Retter
