KEY POINTS:
Auckland has not had a dry weekend since May and this weekend will be no different.
MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said a dry weekend at this time of year would be asking a lot.
He said Auckland had experienced dry Saturdays and Sundays since May but not two dry weekend days in a row.
"In Auckland the rain should start very late in the evening on Saturday so you have all of Saturday free," Mr McDavitt said.
He said Aucklanders had enjoyed a relatively dry week with only 14ml of rain being recorded. "That's not too bad".
But August this year had been wetter than usual with 17 wet days already. Usually there were 14 wet days in the eighth month, so Auckland was already in "bonus" territory, Mr McDavitt said.
He said although there had been a lot of wet weekends, some of them had only seen as little as 4ml, 0.2 and 0.6ml of rain.
The country is set to get a mixed bag of weather this weekend as a low moves up the South Island.
Dunedin is forecast to get rain today but will get a "beautifully fine day" tomorrow.
For Christchurch - where so far this week there hasn't been any rain - there will be some heavy falls on Sunday but tomorrow is predicted to be fine.
For Wellington, southeasterlies will bring rain on Saturday and Sunday. In Hamilton a northerly breeze will bring the rain over the weekend.
