It will be some time before police decide whether to charge the driver of a car that crashed in Whangarei early today, killing two young women.
The pair, aged 17 and 18, were killed when the car they were in rolled down a bank on Anzac Road in Morningside just after 1.30am.
Five young women, aged between 16 and 19, were in the car, Northland police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said.
The two who were killed were in the back seat and not wearing seatbelts, she said.
The driver was breath-tested at the scene and was not under the influence of alcohol.
Police were still investigating the cause of the crash and no decision about charges would be made until the cause was known, Ms Kennett said.
The car landed in the front yard of a property but none of the other occupants of the car was injured.
