KEY POINTS:
Police say a couple, aged 100 and 99, are unlikely to face charges after driving the wrong way along State Highway 1 through Wellington's Ngauranga Gorge on Sunday, because of their age.
Amazingly the duo managed to dodge oncoming southbound traffic for about two kilometres before colliding another car about 9pm.
They escaped with minor injuries, but the road was blocked for about an hour while the scene was cleared.
It was not yet known which of the pair was behind the wheel.
A Wellington police spokesman told NZPA today the driver was unlikely to face charges due to age, but might not be allowed to drive again.
The couple are believed to have joined SH1 from Old Hutt Rd, at the base of the gorge and turned north in the southbound lane.
