No bail for alleged Christmas burglar

A 26-year-old man accused of a Christmas morning break-in where children's presents were taken, today abandoned his bid for release on bail as more burglary charges were laid against him in Christchurch District Court.

Rory Khan Conley, unemployed, of St Albans, is now alleged to have committed three burglaries at the Meadow Park Holiday Camp, in Meadow Street, Papanui, on Christmas Day.

This includes the burglary of the kitchen block and a motel unit where police alleged Christmas presents for two girls aged four and six were taken.

The younger girl's gifts were recovered soon after in a car being driven by Conley.

They are seeking a co-offender and the car belonging to the family, who were visiting from the North Island. The older girl's presents were not found but police arranged for more freshly wrapped presents to be delivered to the family.

Conley also faces charges of possession of two cannabis pipes, and possession of a modified fork which could be used for burglary.

Defence counsel Serina Bailey began a bail application for Conley yesterday and the decision was expected to be made today.

However, she abandoned the application because of the extra charges and Judge Brian Callaghan remanded Conley in custody to January 12, without plea.
