The Middle Eastern man labelled a terrorist by New Zealand First leader Winston Peters tested positive for residue of a chemical found in explosives and heart medication.
Sources have told the Press newspaper that claims Mr Peters made under parliamentary privilege - that the man was carrying explosives - were false.
The man claimed refugee status at Auckland Airport in September and is being held in custody.
The chemical residue is likely to be nitro-glycerine, which can be sprayed under the tongue to help in angina attacks.
