Nippers shine at Riversdale carnival

Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club was overall winner in a Nipper Carnival held at the beach.

Sunday's event attracted more than 100 participants from five surf clubs.

Nipper co-ordinator Madeleine Taylor said the event went well despite the weather, and was topped off with a prizegiving.

The day involved a variety of beach and swimming events for kids, including beach sprints, flag races, and running and swimming relays.

"It was a really, really good event and all the kids did really well," Mrs Taylor said.

"The first aid guy was hardly used at all."

Mrs Taylor said the teams had to skip lunch this year in case it rained. "We were really lucky because an hour after we finished the southerly hit."

Another highlight of this year's carnival was a substantial donation to the club from Summer Tides concert organiser Rosie Broughton.

"It was really wonderful," Mrs Taylor said. "She wanted to show that we're all a community out here and we all support each other."

Lyall Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club placed second and third.
