Two people just before midnight are the latest victims in what has been a day of carnage on New Zealand roads.
In total five people died - and two were critically injured - in vehicle crashes and two people were killed after being hit by a train.
St John ambulance confirmed two people were killed in a "traffic incident" in Kumeu at 11.45pm.
One person has died and another is in a critical condition after a two-car crash on State Highway 65 at Maruia about 9.10pm.
A three-vehicle crash in South Canterbury just after 4pm left one person dead.
