I think you get the service you deserve. When I hear people complain about the poor service they were subjected to, I can't help but wonder what they did - or didn't do - to bring it on.
I have a friend who is simply brilliant at staff-customer interaction and he ends up getting treated like a rock star wherever he goes. Dining with him is an absolute delight because he is so comfortable with what is essentially a delicate dance. He's not afraid to engage with wait-staff, bar tenders, in-flight attendants - anyone. He'll banter happily and he listens well to what they have to say. And best of all, he's absolutely genuine. He's not trying to get something from them. He understands that it's a relationship where both parties play a role and both are as important as each other in making the occasion flow. He smiles, remembers to say please and thank you, asks the staff how they are, doesn't take them for granted and respects their position. It's marvellous.
So, as we approach the hectic social season be sure to play your part in making sure that as you enjoy your leisure time with friends, those who are working are enjoying themselves as much as you are. Service with a smile.
