Northland Iwi leader Sonny Tau is reportedly under investigation by the Department of Conservation for allegedly attempting to smuggle native birds on a flight from Invercargill to Northland.
3 News has reported that Tau could face a $100,000 fine if the allegations are proved.
Wood pigeons, or Kereru, are protected and hunting the birds is illegal.
The Department of Conservation says it does not comment on allegations under investigation.
