Colin Christie equalled his age in ending a 12-year sub-80 drought on Tuesday.
The 79-year-old fired 79-12-67, for 41 points, to win the veteran men’s Stableford.
It could have been lower, he said. A three-putt on the eighth – his 17th hole – cost him breaking his age proper.
“But it was nice to break 80 before I break 80.”
Christie last signed for a card in the 70s in May 2012.
His Tuesday effort emulated fellow vet and 77-year-old Tene Goldsmith, who achieved the feat three times in the space of nine days (September 24 to October 3) – twice at Poverty Bay (76, 76) and once at Tolaga Bay (75).
Veteran-aged players dominated club Stableford competitions over the past week.
Goldsmith’s 76-7-69, for 39 points, won division 1 last Thursday, while Warwick Thompson won division 2 with 37.
On Saturday, Collin Jeffrey won division 1 with 75-7-70, for 38, including 15 pars, while Duncan Bush won division 2 with 86-17-69, for 39.
Lee Pollitt, who hits retirement age next year, won division 2 on Sunday with 40 points, and another in his 60s, Mark Norman, topped division 1 with 80-11-69, for 39.
Te Puke golfer Craig Van Der Nagel suffered tragedy at the recent Poverty Bay Open when his father Ian died the night before the championship 16 semifinals. Van Der Nagel, after discussion with his family, chose to play on and was beaten by friend and fellow Bay of Plenty master Mark Smith, who went on to win the title.
Van Der Nagel paid a victorious tribute to his father not long after his funeral when he won the Te Puke senior men’s club championship title in the front of a large group of family and friends. His 7 and 6 win was his third consecutive senior crown.

Most of the semifinalists in the men’s club championships will be found this weekend and there are some juicy matches expected.
Senior men’s top qualifier Dan Collier is the favourite but knows only too well that his quarter-final opponent, Matt Henwood, has game and could be a problem.
The senior match of the quarters, however, could be the battle of the besties – Zane Boyle v Brad Reynolds.
Quentin Peneha’s clash with Anthony Pahina is one to watch in the intermediate division while Luke Hayes could have his hands full with an in-form Horst Schreiber in the junior section.
The endeavour players are up to the semifinals stage.
The draw for all sections is –
Senior quarter-finals: Dan Collier v Matt Henwood; Ian Loffler or Craig Christophers v Zach Rolls; Zane Boyle v Brad Reynolds; Pete Stewart v Jason Devery.
Intermediate quarterfinals: James Witika v John Collier Jr; Phil Nepia v Mike Christophers, Quentin Peneha v Anthony Pahina; Kelly Spring v Steve Phillips.
Junior quarter-finals: Heath Tupara v Warren Muir; Luke Hayes v Horst Schreiber; Paul Wellard v Mat Downie; Pete Tamatea v Tony Leggett.
