“They both played really well,” said Stewart.
Equally importantly, they combined strongly. When one faltered, the other stepped up.
Tupara, sporting a black eye from copping a stick to the head in the hockey final, and Bond won the first hole and stayed in front.
Stewart and Hayes mounted a mini charge at dormie-4-down, but Tupara finished them off on the 17th with a par, getting a shot.
Former Te Kanawa Cup winners Christophers and Henwood are only too aware of the threat Tupara and Bond pose. But having been there and done that, and after a solid performance in their semifinal, they will back themselves.
“Both of us played reasonably well,” said Christophers.
“We were probably the worst we could be,” said Reynolds.
The Hayes brothers, aiming for a piece of history by making the final as opponents, will have to wait another year.
Sunday will also feature Te Kanawa Cup subsidiary finals.
Father and son Anthony and Shaun Pahina play Glen McKinnon and Dave Harrison in the Fletcher Cup final.
Another father and son duo, Waiti and Kymani Tamatea, 10, meet John Collier Sr and Cliff Nepe in the Turanganui Cup final.
The top qualifiers for the women’s club championship were sorted on Sunday.
Jo Kerr (83) topped the senior division, Jean Foot (93) the intermediate and Kath Papuni (103) the junior.
Jacque Akuhata-Nickerson beat Tai Aramakutu in their intermediate semifinal on Monday.

Poverty Bay
Two men who won their first and only Poverty Bay senior club championship titles in the late 80s and mid-90s are in the hunt to end those decades-long droughts.
Waka Donnelly and Brent Colbert are into this Saturday’s semifinals of the Liquorland-sponsored champs.
Donnelly faces Hayden Keast while Colbert will take on No 1 seed Rob Maruszewski.
Donnelly won the crown in 1988 before heading to the navy while Colbert is the 1994 champion.
Colbert advanced to the last four of the 2024 edition with a 1-up quarterfinal win last Saturday over Stefan Andreassen, whose usually reliable putter let him down at the death – he put his 1m downhill putt on the 18th just over 1m past the hole, then missed the return putt.
Donnelly played his quarter-final the Sunday before, turning on sub-par golf to blow away Zach Rolls 7 and 6.
Keast got a free pass to the semifinals after William Brown gave him their match due to being unavailable if he was to make the final.
South African Maruszewski hits a big ball but it was his short game brilliance that stood out in a 3 and 2 defeat of Pete Stewart.
Top qualifier Maruszewski made some clutch putts and pulled off a couple of exquisite up and downs when it counted.
However, the shot of their match, indeed the day, came from Stewart when he holed out with an 8-iron for eagle-2 on the 348m third hole.
Intermediate top qualifier Stephen Francks sent an ominous warning to his semifinal opponent in a quarter-final display of senior quality. Francks had 10 pars and a birdie in his 5 and 4 win over Alex Kirkpatrick. It set up a semi with 2010 senior champion Tene Goldsmith, who eliminated Arvin Lawler.
Richard Foon slotted a 4m putt on the last to beat Neil Mackie and book a semifinal date with Jon Jenner, who knocked out club captain John Van Helden.
In the only junior quarter-final, Lee “Pikey” Hewson saw off Gisborne Boys’ High student Jett Whitaker. Hewson plays No 1 seed Bill Simpson in one semi; Hamish Williams and Duncan Bush meet in the other.

Patutahi
No 1 seed gone. No 2 seed gone. The intermediate men’s division was blown wide open on quarter-finals day of the club championships.
Pat Molloy cruised past top seed Hamish Harris while second seed Jon Priestley also exited at the hands of Rua Smith.
The other two quarters were more predictable, defending champion Pat Hokianga brushing aside Jason Phillips and No 3 qualifier Tom Brodie toppling Lindsay Jamieson.
Watene Brown defied the seedings in the junior division, the youngster beating No 2 qualifier Graham Holland. Top seed Korban Harrison-Allan advanced over Mike Broad; Sel Skudder eliminated Antonio Zame; and Brian Pohatu defeated Cecil Brown.
The battle of the cousins – Ian Tietjen v John Tietjen – went the way of Ian Tietjen in the endeavour division to set up a semifinal with No 1 seed Wes Pearse.
Chris Kaa knocked out Simon Pittar and will next face Warwick Stevens, who beat Phoenix Nickerson.

Te Puia Hot Springs
James Forrester proved too good for Ian Logan in the Makarikia Cup men’s matchplay final on Sunday.
Forrester shot 83-14-69 en route to a 4 and 3 defeat of Logan.
Hiria McClutchie had two matches in three days to earn her way into the Women’s Handicap Cup final.
She beat Aomihi Cook 2-up last Thursday, then defeated Iritana Ngarimu 1-up on Sunday to set up a duel with Pauline Summersby this Sunday.
McClutchie also won the women’s Stableford on Sunday with 37 points while Eruera West’s 39 topped the men.
Players enjoyed a sunny day after the course was hammered by heavy winds the previous week, resulting in trees down and, as McClutchie put it, “mess everywhere”.
“A big, big thanks go out to the helpers who did the bulk of the clean-up.”
SUNDAY – Men’s Stableford: E. West 39, P. Ngarimu 38.
Women’s Stableford: H. McClutchie 37, A. Cook 37, I. Ngarimu 35.
