KEY POINTS:
Newmarket is now under the watchful eye of a state-of-the-art $150,000-a-year security system.
The Newmarket Business Association has unveiled 14 digital security cameras mounted on commercial buildings around the shopping precinct.
Association head Cameron Brewer said images would be recorded and stored 24 hours a day, seven days a week and be available to the police.
"We will be able to act on anything undesirable almost immediately," he said.
Footage from the "pan, tilt and zoom" cameras will be monitored by a private security firm from a dedicated room at the Newmarket police station.
A street patrol will respond to call-outs from the room, as well as looking for problems for the cameras to record.
