KEY POINTS:
The victim in a fatal car crash which may have been caused intentionally was a 26-year-old newlywed.
A 51-year-old-man is in hospital with serious injuries after crashing into two cars in Karaka, south of Auckland, killing Katie Jean Powles and leaving a 42-year-old man badly injured.
Ms Powles, who had recently married, was returning from work in Manukau City when the accident happened.
Police are appealing for sightings of the man's silver Nissan Bluebird
around the time of the accident at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
They say the man's car crossed the centre line, causing the accident.
Detective Inspector Mark Gutry says the 51-year-old left his family home in Swanson in a distressed state, leaving his family concerned for his well being.
Mr Gutry said the 51-year-old man had been talking about committing suicide.
He was then seen driving erratically by members of the public, before crashing into two cars around 7.30pm.
Three people had to be cut from the wreckage, including the other injured driver's two children, neither of whom were hurt.
Police were investigating whether the crash was premeditated because of the threats and comments the man had made.
They have launched a homicide investigation as a result of the accident.
