An American woman whose husband died in a crash near the Waitomo Caves remains in a critical condition in Waitako Hospital, officials said today.
Kirsten Steinke, 28, is awaiting surgery and her parents, Geraldine and James, have arrived from Colorado to be at her bedside.
Her husband Kenneth Stithem, 31, died in the crash on Thursday.
They were pulling out from Waitomo Caves Rd on to State Highway 3 when a cement truck T-boned the driver's side of their hired vehicle.
The couple, both from Colorado, were married in the US less than a week ago.
