KEY POINTS:
The death of a newborn baby found dumped in a paddock beside a main road in Newcastle in NSW is being treated as suspicious, police say.
A member of the public found the body of the baby boy, wrapped in a towel in an empty paddock at the side of the Pacific Highway at Belmont North this morning.
A crime scene has been established as forensic officers and detectives comb the area for clues.
A police spokesman said while the baby's body was not concealed, people rarely ventured on to the block of land where it was found.
"(The body was) not particularly hidden, just in the paddock," the spokesman said.
"But... it's not a paddock that people walk into or use, it's on the side of a road."
