From July, newborn babies will be screened for hearing loss, the Government said yesterday.
It allocated $16 million in the Budget for the universal screening programme.
As well, $8.4 million was allocated over four years to provide cochlear implants for children with hearing loss.
The screening programme for newborn babies would be rolled out over three years starting in three district health boards in central regions of the North Island - Hawkes Bay, Tairawhiti and Waikato.
