New Zealand's weather settled, unless you are in the South Island

South Islanders hoping to dry out after Cyclone Gita whipped through the country have been given a short reprieve before heavy rain returns.

Today brings more settled weather to the country but tomorrow the West Coast of the South Island should expect another soaking.

Meteorologist Ravi Kandula at MetService said there would be a "fair amount of rain tomorrow".

"We have a front that reaches Fiordland on Sunday and works its way up to Westport by the end of the day," he said.

"Rainfall is going to be heavy up to south of Westport."

The North Island was expected to be mainly fine with calm winds and temperatures in the mid 20s.

Cyclone Gita hit New Zealand on Tuesday night and swept across the country, causing flooding, slips and damage.

A state of emergency was declared in seven districts with the southern North Island and the northern half of the South Island worst hit.
