"He was always thinking like 'I want to aim for something that could win an award'."
Scott Humphreys enforced the man's vision of creating a beautiful landscape that would be adored by others.
"He wanted it to be an award-winning garden, the most special garden in Herne Bay, and unfortunately he passed away during the construction of it," he said.
"It now means a huge amount to his wife, and us, that it has won this prestigious award."
And win it did, the garden won the PSP Landscape of the Year Award during the Registered Master Landscapers (RML) conference held in the last weekend of June.
Its spatial compositions formed by plants in the garden and the incredible level of finish made it stand out from the rest, RML chief executive Noel Brown said.
"That was beyond everyone's expectations. He was very much into design and very much into creating something that was there for the ages.
Harteg said it was an honour to see the man's visions through.
"You can see that he really wanted to create something for his family," he said.
The judges claimed it was "like entering into another world – elegant, calm and green – glowing green architecture to form space and delight to the eye".
The Herne Bay garden also received three gold awards for design, construction, and maintenance.
