New Zealander of the Year finalists named

Olympic gold medallist Valerie Vili and founder of The Warehouse Stephen Tindall are among the New Zealander of the Year finalists.

Olympic gold medallist Valerie Vili and founder of The Warehouse Stephen Tindall were today announced as finalists for New Zealander of the Year.

The pair will go head to head with scientist and inventor of medical devices for the third world, Aucklander Ray Avery.

The winner, recognised for major contribution to the nation, outstanding service to the country and inspiration through achievement, will be announced February 3.

Winners of the Young New Zealander of the Year, Senior New Zealander of the Year, Community of the Year and Local Heroes Awards will also be announced at the gala, with Prime Minster John Key attending to recognise their achievements.

The shortlist for the awards was selected from hundreds of nominated New Zealanders who made extraordinary contributions locally and globally.

Judges including former prime minister Jim Bolger, Dame Malvina Major and former All Black Michael Jones would select the winners.

Mr Bolger said he was "amazed by the overwhelming contribution" people had made to their communities, New Zealand and the world.

"Our success as a nation relies on individuals stepping forward and making the most of themselves, helping others and seeking new ways of doing things. Awards like these give us a chance to say thank you to extraordinary individuals, who inspire us as New Zealanders."
