Two New Zealand Iraqis have returned to their homeland to assess the humanitarian situation on behalf of aid group Tear Fund.
Auckland GP Ali Numan and engineer Hassan Karhiy left on Friday for Iraq via Jordan for an initial three-week tour.
Speaking from Jordan, Mr Karhiy said they were told by Iraqi embassy officials in the city of Amman they were "lucky" to get into Jordan.
"They are not welcoming Iraqis here regardless of their passports. We think that our Tear Fund badges and letters of recommendation got us through."
Tear Fund, a non-government organisation, is providing the logistical support, communications equipment and administration support for the operation, funded by a nationwide appeal.
Tear Fund director Stephen Tollestrup said with people's needs so uncertain the project was the best use of resources.
The men will report back to New Zealand and it is expected they will then lead a bigger team to Iraq to act on their findings.
Dr Numan, who has practised in Auckland since 1994, said: "We know there is a danger there, but we should go and help."
