KEY POINTS:
Renowned stunt driver Terry Grant has set a new Guinness World Record in a Renault Twingo city car.
The audience at the Live Action Arena of the Autosport International Show in Britain looked on as the driver spun the Twingo GT through a gap just 180mm more than the length of the car. Grant used the "J-turn" for the manoeuvre - a technique familiar from television and movie car chases that involves reversing at high speed, spinning the car around 180 degrees, then driving off in the opposite direction.
The Twingo was spun through barriers 3780mm apart. The crowd at the arena saw 12 performances of the stunt over the show's four days. In each demonstration, the gap between the barriers was reduced, breaking the previous world record each time. This culminated in beating the previous record by more than one and a half metres.
Grant has been performing stunts around the world for more than 12 years. This was his 16th world record. The previous record for a J-turn was set on April 9, 1999 in Munich, Germany. Russ Swift spun a car though a gap 1720mm longer than the length of the car.
