Auckland Airport is giving away $120,000 to NZ charities as part of its 12 days of Christmas initiative this year. The Herald is profiling each of the winning charities.
One in three Kiwi women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. Auckland Women's Refuge addresses this need by supporting women and families suffering domestic violence.
This Christmas, Auckland Airport's 12 Days of Christmas Initiative recognised the work of the refuge, which will receive a $10,000 grant.
"I was really excited," said Donna Hill, treasurer for Auckland Women's Refuge, "it's a good match." She's referring to the refuge's plans to use the money to buy a new van.
The van will be used at their new safe house. The house, in South Auckland, is for Maori women and their families. Auckland Women's Refuge has a van already, but it's too small to cope with their transportation needs. Driving families to the refuge, as well as agency visits for families in residence, requires better transport.
