New signs up shortly

Greytown Community Board member Leigh Hay said they were hoping to have up "very soon" two steel-cut signs, designed by Greytown sculptor and Kuranui College art teacher Roger Thompson.

The new "Welcome to Greytown" signs will be put up shortly.

Greytown Community Board member Leigh Hay said they were hoping to have the two steel-cut signs, designed by Greytown sculptor and Kuranui College art teacher Roger Thompson, up "very soon".

"We are just waiting on a final few things from NZTA.

"We are doing the final compliance issues and working with Pope and Gray [contractors] to install them."

The signs will be installed at the southern and northern entrances to the town and need to be erected on concrete pads.

Mrs Hay said they were cost effective and the $10,000 budget for the signs had not been exceeded.

The costs of installation were covered by South Wairarapa District Council.

Mrs Hay said the current signs, which say "Welcome to Greytown, where Arbor Day began, 1890", would be taken down.

A third welcome sign may be created to greet people coming into Greytown from Martinborough. She said the board was investigating the possibility of getting the Greytown Menz Shed members to create a third sign.
