A former primary school teacher has been appointed Secretary for Education.
Education Review Office head Iona Holsted will replace Peter Hughes, who left the role to lead the State Services Commission.
She will take up her new role during a time of great change in the education sector.
Education Minister Hekia Parata announced her shock decision to retire from Parliament last month. Parata is overseeing the biggest education reforms since 1989.
Holsted will carry on an overhaul of the Ministry of Education that Hughes started.
