KEY POINTS:
Sufferers of cardiovascular disease and diabetes can look forward to improved care after the release of a three-year plan today.
The quality improvement plan was developed by the Ministry of Health, District Health Boards, clinical experts and consumers, and was designed to improve the health outcomes and quality of care for people with cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
Chief clinical advisor for the Ministry Sandy Dawson said the plan was an important step towards establishing a nationally accepted programme for dealing with these serious health problems.
"The Ministry, stakeholders and the Expert Advisory Group have worked hard on this plan, and we're looking forward to hearing feedback from the DHBs."
The plan would be reviewed at intervals to coincide with the annual planning cycles of the Ministry and DHBs.
Dr Dawson said a key point in the plan was promoting national consistency and collaboration between DHBs, the Ministry of Health, Non-Government Organisations and the health sector.
