New mental health unit for Waitakere

The Government has given the go-ahead for a $15 million mental health inpatient unit at Waitakere Hospital.

Health Minister Annette King said today the new 40-bed facility was a significant step in development modern health infrastructure for the people of West Auckland.

The new unit will open in the first half of 2007.

Ms King said it would provide a suitable therapeutic environment, allow patients to be appropriately separated and treated and provide facilities that encouraged retention and recruitment of staff.
