New manager for Carterton council

Carterton District Council's newest manager is bringing a wealth of building experience to his new role.

The council's new planning and regulatory manager, Dave Gittings, 48, started his career as a builder in Upper Hutt before receiving a PhD from Victoria University, and later becoming the consent system team leader at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Mr Gittings, the husband of former council manager Lorraine Gittings, moved to the district in 2011, after the couple purchased a 6ha property near Mt Holdsworth in 2002.

Mr Gittings said that he was excited by the opportunity to take on a new challenge.

"The role is a challenge. I've been focused on building control, right across the gambit, and this is an opportunity to expand that."

He was looking forward to the variety his new role offered, he said.

"It's a big wide range of things that you get at a smaller council, you get everything thrown at you, so it's another challenge. I like doing something new and this is certainly ticking those boxes.

"I don't think there will be an element of groundhog day and that's what I'm looking forward to."

When not working on projects around his property, Mr Gittings said he likes to get out and appreciate the Wairarapa on his bike.

Mr Gittings will be starting in his new role on July 18, after a short holiday in Italy. The council's previous planning and regulatory manager, Milan Hautler, retired from the role at Easter.
