KEY POINTS:
Homes and businesses have been evacuated in and around the New Lynn Mall after a mains gas pipe was damaged.
The area is now cordoned off and the Fire Service is predicting that they'll be at the scene in West Auckland through-out the night.
Senior Station officer Matt Camplin said fire fighters are using gas detectors in the surrounding area.
"There's quite a significant leak coming out all around the general shopping area and railway crossing, Totara Ave, Clark Street and Rankin Ave," Mr Camplin said.
He said the detectors sound a warning when the percentage of gas in the air is high enough to start a fire.
The 300mm gas main was ruptured by a pile driver and more than 20 firefighters and the Fire Service's Hazardous Materials unit is on scene.
Mr Camplin said the company which owns the gas line - Vector - is looking at shutting off the gas supply until the ruptured pipe is fixed.
He said a moderate wind is helping disperse the gas.
Fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said the police have carried out a large evacuation.
All trains have been stopped both ways on the Auckland Line.
Children are being kept inside at the New Lynn School.
Vector spokeswoman Helen Keir said an independent contractor had damaged the gas pipe. She said Vector workers are trying to isolate the damaged section of pipe but the gas supply to businesses and homes has so far not been effected.
