Fairytale characters will stalk and strut the stage in the latest Rathkeale/St Matthew's Senior College production, Into The Woods, opening at the Rathkeale College Trust House Theatre tonight.
The award-winning Broadway hit, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and narrative by James Lapine, mashes together a swathe of storiesfrom the Brothers Grimm, re-imagining the wants and wishes of fairytale characters who all inhabit the same stage and storyline - Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella. An ensemble cast perform with classic Sondheim storytelling in musical verse.
Director Joanne Simpson said the senior students involved in the production had been rehearsing since the first term this year and brought to life a story loved by American audiences and last year adapted as a general release movie starring Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
"The show is loved by musical theatre types and is an absolute favourite with American audiences but is not as well known here," Ms Simpson said.
"It is a real challenge musically, which is great for our talented bunch of performers.
"It's funny and sad, and certainly thought-provoking. Hang on to your seats; the sound effects for the Giant voiced by Geraldine Brophy are earth-shatteringly good."
-Tickets for the Rathkeale/St Matthew's Senior College production of Into The Woods cost $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. The production opens tonight at the Rathkeale College Trust House Theatre from 7pm and the season runs through to July 1.
