KEY POINTS:
The alert status at the newly-formed lake in Mount Aspiring National Park has been lowered a notch.
However experts believe locals may not yet be in the clear.
Otago Regional Council chairman Graeme Martin says the dam appears to be reasonably stable.
He says experts will be heading back up to take another look at it in a day or two and they will need to be watching carefully for some time yet.
Mr Martin says although the overflow is not as bad as first thought, a significant failure can not be ruled out.
